San Bernardino County has no reason to be more generous with travel perks than its Southern California neighbors. The county's spendthrift car allowance policies waste public money better used for other needs. County supervisors should reduce the number of people who collect this benefit, and tie the payment to actual costs.
A survey of vehicle benefits by Riverside County shows that San Bernardino County pays the highest car allowance of any county in Southern California. The county gives officials a choice of driving a county vehicle or receiving a $1,123 monthly car allowance, or $1,685 a month for the vast 1st District. Los Angeles County provides a maximum of $620 a month. Orange County offers $765 monthly. And while San Diego County offers as much as $1,000 per month, only 10 people qualify for that amount, with another 34 collecting lower benefits.
San Bernardino County also extends the benefit to far more people than other counties do. The county says 120 people now get the choice of a county car or vehicle allowance -- nearly 2½ times more people than the next most-generous county.
