Sourcing car insurance for young drivers isn't a problem but it is expensive. There are things you can do to reduce the cost of the premiums and the internet is a great place to start looking.
It is ironic that young people and students are perpetually strapped for cash, yet they have to pay the most car insurance. Although it appears unjust, young drivers have less road experience so, on average, are involved in more collisions than other road users and make more insurance claims. If you’re 17 you might find it difficult to pay for your car insurance but there are a few things you can do to make sure you’re paying the lowest rates possible.
When it comes to car insurance for 17 year olds , the model of car you drive will greatly influence your premiums, as it does with all young drivers. Lower grade cars with smaller engines will cost less to insure than sporty racing vehicles. The location in which your car is kept could also make a difference to the amount you pay. If you keep your car in a garage, it is going to be much safer than one out on the street.
As well as these factors, you can also help lower your premiums once you have a full driving licence. When you have a full licence, however, there is another course of lessons you can take called Pass Plus. You wll learn more techniques, like driving on busy roads, and the majority of insurance providers will lower your premiums accordingly.
Although it sounds unfair, car insurance for 17 year olds is a lot cheaper if you are female. Men are more likely to be involved in collisions as new drivers so are charged more for cover. If you are a woman, it might be worth considering a women-only insurance company as they claim to charge women cheaper premiums.
There are a finite number of things you can do to reduce the cost of your insurance. Whatever they may be, the best way of cutting down your insurance costs is to shop around. The internet has made buying car insurance incredibly easy as you now have access to hundreds of policies in a few seconds.

Now new analysis of official statistics by the road safety charity Brake and transport group FedEx Express finds that traffic accidents are the main cause of death among people aged between 15 and 24. They also surveyed 2,800 youngsters and found more than half – or 58 per cent – of them had been in a car driven by a speeding young driver and said they didn’t ask the driver to slow down.
Most of us know that ‘boy racers’ are a bigger danger on the roads than women of the same age – but Association of British Insurers statistics on the danger difference between the sexes may still surprise. ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling told me: “Males aged between 17 and 18 years old are more than twice as likely to make an insurance claim as other drivers and, on average, the claim will be three times higher than that for drivers aged between 30 and 59.
“Men aged between 17 and 20 are nearly 10 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured while driving than 40 to 59 year old males.”
